    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey Chacal, got a puzzler for you. I've got a 82 750RJ that I'm rebuilding the brakes on. The caliper rebuild kit and new pistons are on hand but the kit does not include the slider pin boots and the factory schematic doesn't show them. I can't find those boots for love nor money. Any suggestions?

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hi Robert....well, I've looked on the exploded diagram for the Seca brake calipers and see the slider Pin, but not the "boots" that would be used with it. I know that on the 750 Maxim calipers, the slider pins that are part of the large cast mounting bracket have accordian rubber boots that fit over the slider pin bores, and I wonder if they're the same or similar? Unfortunately I don't have one of those Seca calipers handy to go look at one up close and personal......

So to make a long answer short....no, I have no suggestions! If I had a a set of seca calipers to look at (photo would be fine) that showed me what size and style they are, I could dig through my treasure chest of parts and knowledge and see what is available or might work.........

Ok Chacal, hit my gallery to see pictures. If you need additional reference, the illustration (figure 5.13, page 196) in the Haynes manual shows them. I also need to track down similar boots for my turbo front end. Those boots are visible on page 198, figure 5.14. I have one boot in decent shape and that is it. The rest are mush so making molds of them will be pretty hard. Hoping you have the answer for me bud.

What was the answer???? Enquiring minds want to know!

I've been wondering where to find those rubber belows myself.

I can post a better picture of them if that will help!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    Hey NickoMatic, mucho betterer!

Now can you tell me this: does the "bottom" of each boot have a metal ring molded into it? And if so, give me the OD and ID of that ring (approx.).

Also, are the boots on the left and right side of a single caliper the same? Or are there two different boots PER CALIPER?

And, what is the ID of the hole, in the boot, that the pin passes through? (or the OD of the pin would be just fine).

Finally, is the rubber part of the boot rather stiff, or kinda flimsy and very flexible?

    Thanks for your help!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    No

    Yes, the same boot.

I get 8.24 mm in an area that has no wear on the shaft!

    Completely flexible!

The drawing below is not to scale, hope it gives you a better idea of the part.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    Okay, Nick, VERY thorough. Now......

If there is no embedded metal collar or ring in the base of the boot, how is the boot retained to the caliper....what holds it in place and/or keeps it from "collapsing" at the point where it meets the caliper?

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

That 3 mm lip pops into a machined slot on each side of the mounting bracket that the caliper floats on.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

So the boot fits onto the mounting bracket and not on the caliper itself?

    Hmmm, the plot thickens.........

P.S. boy I really like your drawing!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Yes, the brake to fork mount is where the "boots" press fit into. The calipers hang off this mount via the "pin" in my first picture. Yamaha parts blow up shows the mounting bracket but does not assign a part number to it.

Thanks, I guess I didn't waste all those years in drafting classes after all!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Okay, I'll do some due diligence and see what I can find that might work, and let everyone (well, at least Robert and Nick!) know what I come up with. Thanks guys for all the research, I hope something useful or at least usable turns up.........

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

I guess the answer here is to order up the P/N you shot me Chacal and see what I get for the money. I'll attempt to make it happen this weekend.
Nick, you in the same boat I'm in but you have boots at least. Dead ringers those parts are, except yours are in very nice shape. My pin is corroded rather badly (turned new stainless pins today at work, NICE!) but I'm working on the boot issues.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey Robert, you can do that, but I've already beat you to the draw! Bang-bang. I should have them in here by next week and I'll let you know what I find. Of course, you need those anyway for the 650T, but if you want to hold off on ordering the Seca pin....just to see if it comes with the boots....I gotch'ya covered!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

That works, I'll sit tight. I ought to post photos of those pins, they turned out really nice and I'll bet they don't corrode like the mild steel ones do!
