    Hey Chacal,

    Couple of questions for you:

    1) Have you expanded your offerings for Mikuni carb parts? I'm particularly wondering about replacement allen head fasteners such as you presently offer for the Hitachis.

    2) Do you have or are you aware of any aftermarket float bowl drain screws of the stainless, allen head variety? I have several that have damaged heads on my present bike and I don't want to replace them with the same susceptible screws.

    3) Have you been able to establish any cross-functionality between the Hitachi and Mikuni fasteners?

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey Cereal, thanks for the questions. Here's where I'm at:

    1) Not yet, but I'm getting close. I've determined MOST of the cross references between the different styles of Mikuni's used on these XJ models.....the only set I don't have (and need) is some from an XJ900. I always start out projects like this working from the original parts catalogs and comparing part numbers for interchangability, but before I make any final claims (or material purchases, or offer anything for sale!) I always want a few sets of original carb racks in my hand to do the hands-on verification of the factory manuals....which are sometimes less than, let's say, perfectly accurate.

Once the above determinations are finalized, I'll quickly be able to add the proper, correct sized fasteners for the different Mikuni models.

    2) Not yet....another project. Have samples of all the different screws and they're out for quotes. Unlike the Hitachi bowl drain screws, the Mik's use a real oddball thread pitch that I have not been able to source from anyone yet.....although I'm sure that someone, somewhere makes it. Making the screws from scratch is quite expensive, and I'd prefer to take an already-made allen head screw of the proper dimensions and machine those, rather than make a whole new screw. It's the difference between $4.00 a screw (like the Hitachi's) and $12+ per screw (if you make them from scratch).

    3) I'm not sure what you mean by this question...if you're asking whether a bank of Mik's could be substituted onto a bike that originally used Hitachi carbs (or vice-versa), I just don't have that knowledge. Initial thoughts are that it wouldn't be worth the effort.

The REAL game is to find someway to make a bolt-up fuel injection system that will work in place of the carbs. By "bolt-up" I mean plug-and-play, not "have a mechanical and electrical and computer science degree(s) and then fiddle and play with it for a year or two to get it right". I absolutely admire and are in awe of people who can do so, but I'm not that type of researcher, and I'm not that type of customer, either.

These four carb set-ups are really cool looking, and perform quite well when everything is perfectly right, but in any other state or condition are just a real pain in the exhaust.

Of course, if that wasn't the question you were asking, let me know!!!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    Thanks for the update Chacal.

Looking forward to progress on Items 1) & particularly 2)

    3) I agree with you about the bolt-on fuel injection path. But until then...

I guess I was wondering if you had been able to ascertain if any of the Hitachi fasteners (e.g. float bowl screw, diaphragm cover screw) could be used in the same capacity on the Mikunis.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Quick answers are: not yet, and maybe but probably not.

The float bowl screws are definetly different, in fact they're different between different models of Mikunis.

The carb hats screws are also different.

The "Mikunis" used on the XJ series really encompass 4 different types of carbs, whereas the Hitachi carbs are all HSC32 (or the very similar HSC33) models on all the XJ models that used them. Lots of interchangable parts on the Hitachis, even when they carry different original part numbers for the same item----for instance the carb bowls themselves----in reality the parts are completely interchangable.

Not so on the Mikuni's, where the different carb models....although all in the same "family" of carb models.....do differ quite significantly in various ways and are NOT interchangable.

That's why I have to do the two-step process, and that's why it's taking so long!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    Mucho gracias, senor Rhys.

    Sorry, I don't sell kerosene heaters.....yet!

I also don't like the smell of them, although they do provide that nice "blast furnace" feel. I actually sprung for a 220V electric version (about $100 on eBay) and it'll get my 4-car home garage (probably around 800 sq. ft. total) nice and toasty after about 30-40 minutes. My house had 220V for the dryer circuit, so I just tapped off that circuit and put an outlet in the garage. As long as I don't run the dryer while I'm heating the garage, things are okay......

I must say, Christmas has come early in the Northwest! I ordered several items from Chacal to be delivered by the 21st of December and he gets them delivered on the 17th. Amazing!!! :D

If only all my suppliers were as expedient and easy to work with as he (and that's saying a lot working in a parts store ).

Thanks, again, Chacal. You've saved my Christmas vacation!

    Hey chacal,

XJ650 stock handlebars? Got 'em lying around someplace? Now that I have the very shiny mirrors you sent me, I need a stock bar so I can see something with them.

Apprently, one of the POs of this poor 650 stuck some nearly straight bars on this bike and some weird ugly mirrors that admittedly *work*, but they're... well... freakin' UGLY.

    Help?

    82
But I have ordered one already. Cycle Therapy had one for $55.
Thanks, if something happens and it doesn't work or something, I may need one.

The J means 82 right? Will the master cylinder from an 83 work on an 82? I thought they were the same. I guess not. For some stupid reason I think i may have said 83 xj750j to them, but I hope they would have caught it since the J means 82.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey KG.....okay, if you find it needs a rebuild kit, let me know. Make SURE that the little relief hole in the base (floor) of the reservoir is clear, that's always a big problem with old master cylinders on these bikes. You have to use a single strand of wire to push through that tiny hole to clean it..........

Yes, the "J" is the model year, meaning 1982....across all models. In other words, in 1982, we have:

    550J----1982 550 Maxim
    550RJ----1982 550 Seca
    650J----1982 650 Maxim
    650RJ---1982 650 Seca
    650LJ----1982 650 Turbo
    750J----1982 750 Maxim
    750RJ---1982 750 Seca

Note how the last character is the model year signifier:

1980 models use the letter "G" as a code for the year model.
1981 models use the letter "H" as a code for the year model.
1982 models use the letter "J" as a code for the year model.
1983 models use the letter "K" as a code for the year model.

So, for instance, a 1983 XJ750 Maxim would be:

    XJ750K

In 1985-on, the last character, if it is a "C", merely means it is a "California" model and has some emissions-related differences from the other 49-state models. The last character designates the year on non-Calif. models, , and the letter before the "C" designates the year on Calif. models:

1985 models use the letter "N" as a code for the year model.
1986 models use the letter "S" as a code for the year model.

    Examples:

    1985 Maxim non-X 49-state model = XJ700N
    1985 Maxim non-X California model = XJ700NC
    1985 Maxim X 49-state model = XJ700XN
    1985 Maxim X California model = XJ700XNC

    1986 Maxim non-X 49-state model = XJ700S
    1986 Maxim non-X California model = XJ700SNC
    1986 Maxim X 49-state model = XJ700XS
    1986 Maxim X California model = XJ700XSC

As an aside, I've always admired these 1986 "X" model codes, as the model/year designation (XS and XSC) phonetically sound out the word "excess"......and I'd congratulate Yamaha on such a clever marketing tactic, but alas, it just seems like it was a "luck of the draw" sorta thing.........

And no, I have no idea while Yamaha skipped the letter "M" for the 1985 model year designator (1984 were "L" models) and then why they skipped from "N" (1985) all the way to "S" for the 1986 model year.

Now, in regards to the differences between a 1982 and 1983 XJ750 Maxim master cylinder:

These master cylinders are basically identical, with the difference being that the 1982 750 Max version has an internal fluid level "float" and sensor unit that allows the computer dash to sense a "low brake fluid" condition. The sensor has a wire lead coming out of the base of the m/c which plugs into the main hanress.

The 1983 750 Max/Midnight Max master cylinder has no such float/sensor/lead wires, as the gauges on 1983 750 Max models are an analog (not a computer-driven) gauge package.

Therefore, the 1982 (float level sensor style) master cylinder can be successfully used on either a 1982 or 1983 model, as when it is used on a 1983 bike, you just ignore/cut-off/tape up etc. the sensor lead wires (and optionally remove the float from inside the master cylinder).

A 1983 (no sensor) master cylinder can be used on a 1982 bike, but you will lose the low-brake-fluid level warning feature, and perhaps have to deal with a gauge warning light that is always "warning" you. If you have a used 1982 master cylinder, and it still has the sensor/float/lead wires unit in it, you can successfully transplant that unit into the 1983 style master cylinder with a little bit of effort.

Thanks chacal. So I can use it if it's an 83 they send. I will call them tomorrow and see what it is before they ship it anyways. My battery warning on the display stays on already. The trick to fix it i found here didn't work for mine. Now that I fixed the switch to make the warning light stop flashing it doesn't bother me.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

KG-----if you indeed have a 1982 model XJ750 (J) Maxim, then you need to use a master cylinder off a 1982 XJ750 Maxim ONLY if you want the brake fluid level warning sensor light to function.

You can use a master cylinder off a 1983 XJ750 Max/Midnight Maxim but that master cylinder does NOT have the brake fluid warning sensor mechanism within it. Using a 1983 master cylinder on a 1982 bike will result in a brake fluid level warning on the dash either staying on continously, or never coming on even if the fluid level is low......I don't know what the result will be, as I don't know how the computer monitor system in the '82 dash interprets the input signal (or lack thereof) from the fluid sensor in the master cylinder.

You can SWAP the sensor unit out of a 1982 XJ750 Maxim master cylinder into a 1983 XJ750 Maxim or Midnight Maxim master cylinder, and then, viola!, the 1983 master cylinder becomes a 1982 master cylinder.

Again, all of this has to do with the BRAKE FLUID warning light, not the battery sensor.....that's a whole different issue!

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

I put an 83 master cylinder on my 82 and it works fine. Their are some differences. I will get pics of each and post them. On the 82 the brake line connects to the end and on the 83 it connects to the front. Of course like chacal said, the 83 doesn't have the sensor, which is the only functional difference.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey KG....okay, if it works, great. Just be aware that the original master cylinders for both the 1982 and 1983 750 Maxims had a brake fluid outlet port that faced towards the CENTER of the bike, not forward.........

The only master cylinders that had a foward-facing fluid port are from the following models:

XJ550 all models (note, this is a "small" master cylinder for a single caliper)
    XJ650 Seca
    XJ650 Turbo models
    XJ700 all models
    XJ900

Just wanted to add my 2 cents in praise of the guy who has everything to satisfy XJ bikers. Chacal shipped out my colourtune (Canadian eh?), carb and exhaust parts just before Christmas, and I had them in my possession before New Years...fantastic when you think of the busy season and my Atlantic coast location. We had a problem with the float bowl gaskets that was resolved in a day...nobody gives that kind of service anymore...except our beloved Chacal! I'm awaiting some carb intake boots but have so much to do that I'm not pacicky over getting them. Chacal, I don't know how you do it but you have the best prices, best service, and best selection. Oh yeah, I didn't have to pay duty on the parts I order, but they nailed me on the GST (sales tax crap). I applied to have it all refunded...now that's a laugh!

Include me as another satisfied customer. Ordered all the rings and seals for a carburetor rebuild. They arrived quickly without any hassles. If only I could order warm weather so I can stand to work in the garage. Chacal, thanks again.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hi Len, greetings from Dublin, Ireland - count me in as a very satisfied customer too, and thanks for the insulator pieces foc.

By the way, can you source some small washers, so that I can raise the needle up a bit on the Mikunis on the X. As you know, they do not have the groove and circlip for adjusting mid range fuel mixture.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Well, well... small world. 'course, I ordered a bit more... by the time I threw in airbox booties, a clutch cable, the air filter... I dropped well over a hundred bucks this time out.

Now maybe I can clean up these carb bodies and finish up the writeup...

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

    Hi Len,

My parts order got here yesterday, that was FAST! Everything looks great, I can't wait to start working on the bike. Thanks for the fantastic service and advice, I appreciate your help. The spin-on oil filter kit looks like a winner and the colortune and carbtune should make tuning the carbs very easy. Next order will be valve shims and more small bits.

    Cheers and thanks again,

    Phil

    BRAKE PARTS:

    Okay, here goes:

The older I get, the more important stopping quickly becomes to me. In some ways, it becomes even more important than accellerating quickly. Without a cage to protect you, and out there with all the chattering folks in their 2-ton cars and SUV's and trucks, safety quickly becomes the #1 issue when riding around in the real world---and nothing means "safety" as much as a great set of brakes. So do yourself a favor, and make sure your braking system is all that it can be.......

First and foremost, make sure that your stock, original brake system is up to par. Make sure that:

    * pads and shoes are within factory specs, and replace if necessary.
    * the master cylinder(s) are working properly, and that the fluid is clean and flows freely, without any air bubbles. MAKE SURE THE TINY, MINISCULE PRESSURE RELIEF PORT IN THE MASTER CYLINDER IS FREE AND CLEAR OR YOUR BRAKES WILL NEVER FULLY RELEASE AND WILL NOT ONLY WEAR QUICKER, BUT THE EXTRA HEAT BUILD-UP WILL:
    > warp your rotors
    > wear out your pads
    > dramatically reduce your stopping distance. Brakes work by turning motion into heat, and if your brakes are already heated (due to constant engagement), well........
    * the brake hoses are in great condition.
    * the calipers are functioning properly, and not stuck or leaking.
    * brake rotors are true, within specs as to thickness and runout, and do not exhibit any cracks around the mounting holes nor the outside edges, IF THEY HAVE CRACKS THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED!

    To upgrade your brakes, consider:

    * if you don't have dual front discs (all XJ550's, and XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models), consider doing a conversion to such a set-up.
    * install a big-bore master cylinder (as came standard on dual-disc bikes).
    * replace stock rubber hoses with stainless-steel braided hoses. This will make a difference you can feel.
    * use higher-friction brake pads and shoes, such as sintered metallic materials. These work better than organic pads once they warm up, but do so at the cost of greatly reducing the life of your rotors and brake drum.

    Master Cylinders:

mc1) OEM and aftermarket complete Master Cylinder Assembly, brand new units perfectly replace the originals. Contains lid, diaphram, piston assembly, and lead wires for fluid level switch (on models so equipped). Does NOT include the brake light switch, lever, or mounting hardware. Lettering and style of the cover/lid may differ from your original.

HCP2966 OEM rear complete Master Cylinder Assembly, brand new unit perfectly replaces your original. Fits all XJ900 models.
    $ 94.00

    Master Cylinder Rebuild Kits:

mc1) OEM and aftermarket brake Master Cylinder Rebuild Kits contain all the operational parts you need to correctly rebuild your master cylinder: piston, piston seal, piston spring, piston rubber sealing boot, and retaining circlip. NOTE: the piston seal does not come pre-installed onto the piston, and at first glance, you may wonder "how the heck do you get that small seal opening over that large piston?". Well, lots of lube (brake fluid) and patience and a small, dull pry tool works wonders. Make sure that you install the seal with the flared seal "lip" facing towards the fluid outlet!

NOTE: be sure you very carefully clean and inspect your used, original master cylinder for any damage and rebuildability. If the pressed-in steel piston bore is badly scarred or pitted-rusted, then it must be honed to a silky-smooth finish before installing new components. If pits or scratches are too deep to be removed, it is best to obtain a replacement master cylinder (new or used) rather than to try to rebuild a damaged original. Remember, your life literally depends on your brakes....not always in day-to-day riding, but when it counts the most, in an emergency situation; and those always happen in the blink of an eye, and without prior warning.....

HCP1694 Aftermarket front Master Cylinder Rebuild Kit, for all XJ550 models.
    $ 32.00

    $ 49.00

    Master Cylinder Sight Glass:

mc2) While you're rebuilding or even replacing your front master cylinder, you might as well go ahead and replace that dull, clouded, cracked thick plastic sight "window" that allows you to see the level of brake fluid in the reservoir. The original "transparent" round plastic window ages neither gracefully nor well over time, and becomes cloudy within a a few years. Our replacement flat mineral glass windows are the correct size, they won't ever get cloudy, and are one of those small details that you can step back, look at, and say to yourself: "Kewl".

Okay, all that's the good news. The bad news is that the old plastic seal can be a beast to remove. Sometimes, they come out all nice and easy. Sometimes, you have to struggle, and do as that classic old Pink Floyd song suggests: "One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces......". You get the idea. You'll have to fight, struggle, and then win. Clean out the edges of the bore exceedingly well, and make sure that all remaining pieces and remnants of the old window and adhesive are gone before gluing in the new window.

And while you've got that old sight window out, go ahead and dig out the thin aluminum disc that lives right behind the sight window, and which restricts the view of the fluid in the reservoir. Although this disc never wears out, it does hinder you from getting a good view of the fluid level. Again, just carefully pry it out.

Finally, you'll need a good quality adhesive to install the new sight sight glass into the cylinder body. Although there are probably lots of brands of gasket-maker/sealant material that will work, we've found one that is black, easy to work with, and is impervious to brake fluid (NOTE: if you're going to try to use some gasket material that you have sitting around, make DARN SURE that you test it to see whether brake fluid attacks it or prevents it from hardening (almost none of the major gasket-maker materials have been "tested" by their manufacturers against brake fluid, since you do not normally ever use gasket-sealant material in a brake system).

HCP1074 Front brake master cylinder Glass Fluid Level Sight Window, correct size and thickness crystal-clear mineral glass. Each:
    $ 5.95

HCP3120 Aftermarket black Gasket Maker, 3.8 ounce squeeze tube. Enough to do about ten thousand sight glasses! But it's the smallest size offered. I'm sure it works well in other applications. Each:

    Disc Brake Caliper Hardware:

bp2) OEM and aftermarket disc brake caliper BLEEDER SCREWS, in both the original style and the improved "speed-bleeder" design that allows on-person bleeding. Speed bleeder valves (screws) have an internal spring and ball "check-valve" that allows to fluid to flow out, but prevents air from being drawn back in, thus simplifying and otherwise time-consuming procedure. NOTE: speed-bleeders should NOT be used when filling a "dry" brake system----one where the lines, calipers, or master cylinder has been changed, for example----as the air in the system will compress, and the speed-bleeder valve will prevent fluid from flowing through the system. Always bleed dry systems using standard bleeder screws first, and only then install the speed-bleeders!

The caliper bores have small accordian "bellows" boots that seal these openings where the slider pins enter, preventing dirt and moisture from making an unwelcome intrusion. Don't overlook replacing these boots when rebuilding your calipers!

    Disc Brake Rotor Hardware:

bh3) OEM and aftermarket disc brake rotor Mounting Bolts and Lock Washers, high-strength, heat treated bolts and double-ear lock washers. We highly recommend replacing the bolts each time a rotor is changed. Lock washers can be re-used, but the un-bending and re-bending of the lock ears can both fatigue and break them off.

    Brake Hoses & Lines:

    Brake Distribution Block:

bd1) OEM brake hose line Distribution Block or "Joint". The brake hose from the master cylinder terminates at this distribution block, which is used to "split" the single line from a master cylinder into the two lines that go to each brake caliper. In single-caliper systems, this block serves the purpose as being a brake line "joint", coupling the hose from the master cylinder to the hose to the single caliper.

HCP2815 OEM brake line Distribution Block/Joint, 90-degree joint used on all XJ550 models, XJ650 Maxim and Midnight Maxim, and 1983 XJ750 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models. One the XJ750 dual-disc models, this joint uses a double-deep union bolt on the output side (the caliper side) to allow it to act as a distribution block. This same set-up can be adapted to be used on any dual-disc system to replace unavailable original style distribution blocks.

    Brake System Tools:

bp1) Master Cylinder Circlip Removal/Installation Pliers----these special extra-deep 90-degree angled circlip pliers allow you to easily remove and install the circlip (or "c'-clip) that hides way down inside the top of the plunger bore (below the rubber boot). Without a DEEP set of circlip pliers, you're going to fight and struggle with this part of your master cylinder rebuild project. Regular store-bought circlip pliers may have a 90-degree attachment, but unless they are extra-deep like these, they still won't be able to reach that circlip.

HCP1597 Aftermarket master cylinder Circlip Pliers, each:

    BODY PARTS:

bp2) OEM body side cover panel Rubber Mounting Grommets, Bumpers, and Pads. These come in a variety of sizes and shapes for different models, and all of them allow the side cover panels to be properly mounted to the bike frame or prevent vibration. GROMMETS normally fit into an open, c-shaped mounting "ear" on the side panel, or onto the bike frame via a double-lip and accept a pointed mounting "peg" molded into the side panel. BUMPERS normally push into a round hole in the side cover, and have a small "tail" that cinches tight once pushed through the hole. PADS are thin, flat insulators that are attached onto the side panel. NOTE: some grommets also have a small, mushroom-shaped metal collar that fits within the grommet and provides extra stability and rigidity to the grommet once installed.

    m) Rifle Fairing off an XJ650 Maxim, black, very nice shape, with a shorty 12" windscreen. You can see this style fairing at:

    www.rifle.com/Motorcyc...xim%20650)

It has the headlight insert for the stock round headlight. And it has most of the mounting hardware; some of the long mounting bars (mounted to the bike) I may keep for fitting another style fairing onto my bike. Rifle sells complete replacement hardware kits for these for $48; you may be able to talk them into selling you just a partial kit for less, or just fabricate them yourself.

This is a very high quality fairing and is in very nice shape. A couple of very small scratches in the paint on the right side. VERY Small.

$150 + shipping, which will be expensive, as this is a big piece and has to go "oversize" via UPS or FedEx.
