    Chacal,
    Thank you for your quick service. I got my parts in no time. Also, thank you for pointing out the fuel line diameters. I would have gotten the wrong one if you hadn't said anything.

    Do you have a coolant reservoir tank for my 85 Maxim-X by any chance? I'm about 3 weeks away from completing my chopped Maxim and would like to get a better one than what I have now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Alex....by the "chrome tailight bracket" do you mean the license plate bracket, or the chrome housing that the the red tail light lense sits in?

    Maxim85.....is your bike an air-cooled or watercooled engine?

    Johno----I should have a good used one, will send you a PM in a little bit.

    Len,

    Do you have a petcock for my 82 XJ650? It barely drips past in Res and On. It only flows correctly in the Prime position.

    I couldnt find a rebuild kit for it, so I got what I could from the dealership. That only included the plastic circle with 4 holes that is in the middle of the assembly and the o-ring that goes around the selector knob itself. Do you have a whole assembly/rebuild kit/or and suggestions. Thanks....

    BTW, did the parts work out I shipped you?

    Re: XJ PARTS FOR SALE---FOR ALL MAXIM, SECA, AND TURBO MODEL

    Hey Crath....they worked out great, thanks!

    Okay, here is the complete list of petcock rebuild parts and kits needed to rebuild original petcocks. I know there's a lot, but.........

    You already have the DISTRIBUTION VALVE (the plastic disc with the 4 holes in it) and the SELECTOR LEVER O-RING.

    You'll still need the WAVE WASHER, the VACUUM DIAPHRAM, the fuel OUTLET PLATE GASKET, and the spring SHIM WASHER.....at the very least. I would also replace the petcock-to-tank SEALING RING, as well as the petcock-to-tank mounting SCREWS AND WASHERS, and the in-tank FILTER if yours is dirty, torn or missing.

    INDIVIDUAL OEM PETCOCK REPAIR PARTS AND KITS:

    fp13) Petcock fuel position Selector Lever O-Ring. These are usually worn out and need to be replaced whenever you go into the petcock. This o-ring found into the groove along the outside of the selector lever.

    HCP108 OEM petcock Selector Lever O-Ring. Fits all XJ550/650 (except Turbo models)/750/1100 models using the original petcock.
    $ 5.00

    HCP2339 OEM petcock Selector Lever O-Ring. Fits all XJ650 Turbo, and all XJ700 and XJ900 models using the original petcock.
    $ 5.00

    fp12) Petcock fuel position Selector Lever Distribution Valve. This is the hard plastic molded disc with the 4 holes in it that fits below the selector lever. These are usually worn out and need to be replaced whenever you go into the petcock. A worn valve will cause your petcock to leak fuel while in the RUN position.

    HCP109 OEM Selector Lever Distribution Valve. Fits all XJ550/XJ650 (except Turbo models)/750/1100 models.
    $ 9.00

    HCP1384 aftermarket Selector Lever Distribution Valve. Fits all XJ550/XJ650 (except Turbo models)/750/1100 models. Same as the HCP109 above but at a better price!
    $ 5.00

    HCP2338 OEM Selector Lever Distribution Valve. Fits all XJ650 Turbo models, and all XJ700 and XJ900 models.
    $ 9.00

    HCP2930 aftermarket Selector Lever Distribution Valve. Fits all XJ650 Turbo models, all XJ700 and XJ900 models. Same as the HCP2338 above but at a better price!
    $ 5.00

    fp11) Petcock fuel position Selector Lever Wave Washer. These are usually worn out and need to be replaced whenever you go into the petcock. This spring washer fits in-between the selector lever and the outer faceplate, and provides the proper spring-pressure against the selector lever to properly engage the distribution valve.

    HCP107 OEM Selector Lever Wave Washer. Fits all XJ550, all XJ650 (except Turbo), and all XJ750 models.
    $ 2.00

    HCP2918 OEM Selector Lever Wave Washer. Fits all XJ650 Turbo, all XJ700 models, and XJ900 models.
    $ 1.50

    fp4) OEM petcock Lever Rebuild Kits. These kits contain the plastic distribution "valve", the fuel position lever o-ring, and the fuel selector lever wave (spring) washer.

    HCP945 petcock Lever Rebuild Kit, fits all XJ550/650 (except turbo)/750 original petcocks.
    $13.00

    fp10) Petcock fuel position Petcock-to-Tank O-Ring. These are usually worn out and need to be replaced whenever you remove the petcock. This rubber o-ring fits onto the top of the petcock.

    HCP117 OEM Petcock-to-Tank O-Ring. Fits all XJ550/650 (except Turbo models)/750/1100 models. Molded into a oval shape as original.
    $ 3.50

    HCP1385 aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank O-Ring. This is a large o-ring and is NOT molded like original; however, it will fit and seal correctly. Fits all XJ550/650 (except Turbo models)/750/1100 models. Each
    $ 2.50

    HCP2340 OEM Petcock-to-Tank O-Ring. Fits all XJ650 Turbo models, all XJ700 and XJ900 models. Molded into a oval shape as original.
    $ 3.50

    HCP1659 aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank O-Ring. This is a large o-ring and is NOT molded like original; however, it will fit and seal correctly. Fits all XJ650 Turbo models, all XJ700 and XJ900 models.
    $ 2.50

    fp8) Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw. The heads on these are usually stripped and need to be replaced whenever you remove the petcock. NOTE: original Yamaha screws feature a small, integral shoulder flange. All aftermarket screws have an overall head diameter that is similar to the original screws, but do NOT have a flange.

    HCP118 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw, grey-phosphate coated alloy steel. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. Each.
    $ 1.50

    HCP118SET2 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. Set of two.
    $ 2.50 pair

    HCP2922 Aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw, bright zinc-plated steel with phillips drive, pan-headed design. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. Each.
    $ 1.00

    HCP2922SET2 Aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw, bright zinc-plated steel with phillips drive, pan-headed design. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. Set of two.
    $ 1.50 pair

    $ 2.50 pair

    HCP2924 Aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw, black-oxide coated 18-8 stainless steel with phillips drive, pan-headed design. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. NOTE: these screws are slightly longer (2mm) than stock but it makes no difference in fit and function. Each:
    $ 1.50

    HCP2924SET2 Aftermarket Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw, black-oxide coated 18-8 stainless steel with phillips drive, pan-headed design. Fits all XJ550/650/750/1100 models. Set of two.
    $ 2.50 pair

    HCP2341 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw. Fits all XJ700 and XJ900 models. NOTE: the original petcock screw has an integral flanged washer under the head, and this flanged head makes is VERY hard to remove, as the the petcock body and the fuel outlet port "traps" the flanged washer when trying to remove the screw. These replacement tank screws HAVE NO FLANGED WASHER ATTACHED, so it "fits" onto the petcock body much easier, while still providing the sealing surface necessary. Each.
    $ 1.50

    HCP2341SET2 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw. Fits all XJ700 and XJ900 models. Set of two.
    $ 2.50 pair

    fp7) Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw WASHER. These washers are made from a fuel-resistant hard fiber material and need to be replaced every so often, and certainly every time you remove the petcock from the tank.

    HCP2743 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw WASHER. Fits all XJ550/650 700/750/900/1100 models. Each.
    $ 1.00

    HCP2743SET2 OEM Petcock-to-Tank Mounting Screw WASHERS. Fits all XJ550/650/700/750/900/1100 models. Set of two.
    $ 1.75 pair

    fp19) Petcock chrome selector lever faceplate Mounting Screw,, the tiny phillips-headed screws that secure the chrome ON-FUEL-RES-PRI faceplate to the petcock body. Originals normally have stripped heads after one or two on-and-off sessions!
    Fits all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, XJ900, and XJ1100 petcocks. Use 2 per petcock.

    $ 2.50

    HCP2908 Aftermarket petcock faceplate Mounting Screw, black-oxide coated steel, each:
    $ 1.00

    HCP2908SET2 OEM petcock faceplate Mounting Screws, set of 2:
    $ 1.75

    fp18) Aftermarket petcock Vacuum Diaphram Seat Plunger O-ring. This is the o-ring that fits onto the "business end" of the vacuum diaphram plunger, an actually contacts the machined seat in the petcock body. It is this o-ring that controls whether fuel flows (or doesn't flow) when no vacuum is presented to the petcock. When worn, torn, or distorted, it allows fuel to leak into the carbs all the time. This is a true "O"-ring seal and not the "D"-ring as used on some original petcocks, although it can be used to replace original D-ring seals. Used on all XJ550, XJ650, XJ700, XJ750, XJ900, and XJ1100 petcocks. This o-ring comes (already installed) on our standard and deluxe aftermarket vacuum diaphram repair kits, and with our complete petcock repair kits---but it can be ordred separate if you are just doing a minor rebuild of your petcock. Please be sure to use assembly lube (like the HCP1714 silicone grease/lube) when installing.

    HCP1658 aftermarket petcock Plunger O-Ring, each:
    $ 1.50

    fp3) Aftermarket petcock Standard Vacuum Diaphram Repair Kits. This is the part that, when worn, torn, or ruptured, allows fuel to leak into the carbs all the time. Double-gasketed plunger assembly has the o-ringed plunger tip. You must save and re-use your original plastic spacer plate!

    HCP110 Aftermarket petcock standard Vacuum Diaphram Repair Kit. Fits all XJ550, XJ650 (except turbo), and XJ750 models with an original o-ringed plunger tip. Order the HCP663 washer listed below if using this repair kit to repair a petcock that originally used a "d"-ring on the plunger tip.
    $ 12.00

    $ 14.00

    fp14) Aftermarket petcock Deluxe Vacuum Diaphram Repair Kits. This is the part that, when worn, torn, or ruptured, allows fuel to leak into the carbs all the time. Double-gasketed plunger assembly has the o-ringed plunger tip, and comes complete with the plastic spacer plate!

    HCP2282 Aftermarket petcock Deluxe Vacuum Diaphram Repair Kit, complete with the plastic spacer plate. Fits all XJ550, XJ650 (except turbo), and XJ750 models with an original o-ringed plunger tip. Order the HCP663 washer listed below if using this repair kit to repair a petcock that originally used a "d"-ring on the plunger tip.
    $ 19.00

    fp5) Aftermarket petcock Complete Standard Rebuild Kits. These kits contain either the HCP110 or HCP1657 vacuum diaphram repair kit (above), plus the plastic distribution "valve", the fuel position lever o-ring, and the petcock-to-tank mounting o-ring. NOTE: petcock mounting screws, mounting screw washers, faceplate screws, and selector lever wave washer is NOT included in this kit and must be ordered separately if desired.

    HCP124 petcock standard Complete Standard Rebuild Kit. Fits all XJ550/650 (except Turbo models)/750 models with an original o-ringed plunger tip. Order the HCP663 washer listed below if using this repair kit to repair a petcock that originally used a "d"-ring on the plunger tip.
    $ 26.00

    HCP1661 petcock standard Complete Standard Rebuild Kit. Fits all XJ700/900 models with an original o-ringed plunger tip. Order the HCP663 washer listed below if using this repair kit to repair a petcock that originally used a "d"-ring on the plunger tip.

    HCP6060 aftermarket petcock deluxe Complete Rebuild Kit: contains everything you'll need to repair an original petcock: the HCP2822 deluxe diaphram repair kit (with the plastic spacer plate); the selector lever o-ring, wave washer, and distribution valve; the petcock-to-tank o-ring, two stainless faceplate screws, two petcock-to-tank mounting screws and their sealing washers, the fuel outlet plate gasket, and the in-tank filter!Fits all XJ550/650 (except Turbo models)/750 models with an original o-ringed plunger tip. Order the HCP663 washer listed below if using this repair kit to repair a petcock that originally used a "d"-ring on the plunger tip.
    $ 52.00

    HCP5870 aftermarket petcock deluxe Complete Rebuild Kit: contains everything you'll need to repair an original petcock: the diaphram repair kit; the selector lever o-ring, wave washer, and distribution valve; the petcock-to-tank o-ring, two stainless faceplate screws, and two petcock-to-tank mounting screws and their sealing washers, and the in-tank filter! Fits all XJ700 and XJ900RK models with an original o-ringed plunger tip.
    $ 52.00

    HCP5871 petcock deluxe Complete Rebuild Kit: contains everything you'll need to repair both original petcocks and the vacuum pod control unit: the HCP2822 deluxe diaphram repair kit (with the plastic spacer plate); two each of the selector lever o-ring, wave washer, and distribution valve; two of the petcock-to-tank o-ring, four stainless faceplate screws, four petcock-to-tank mounting screws and their sealing washers, two of the petcock drain screws and their sealing washers, two each of the vacuum diaphram pod short and long screws with lockwashers, and two of the in-tank filters! For all XJ1100 models with the original dual petcocks and separate vaccum control unit.
    $ 99.00

    fp6) HCP663 petcock vacuum diaphram spring Shim Washer. Order this washer to be able to use any of the diaphram repair kits on a petcock that originally used a "d"-shaped rubber ring on the plunger tip. This washer goes behind the plunger spring and acts as a tension shim to allow the spring to put more pressure on the replacement-style o-ringed plunger tip, and thus allowing it to seat and seal properly. The key is this: if you are using an "o-ring" vacuum diaphram repair kit (NOTE: all of the replacement vaccum diaphram repair kits are only available with an o-ring tipped seat plunger!) to replace an original "d-ringed" plunger, then you'll need to use this shim! Used on all XJ550, XJ650 except Turbo, XJ700, XJ750, XJ900, and XJ1100 petcocks (or vacuum module for 1100's).
    $ 1.00

    *******************

    Also, you need to be aware of the following in order to sucessfully rebuild a petcock:

    Sometimes the problem is not only with worn parts, but work petcock
    bodies. A couple of tips:

    - "surface cut" the back side of the selector lever face, using some very fine (400-600 grit) sandpaper wetted with WD40, etc. as a lubricant.

    You'll need something VERY FLAT to use as a backing when you are performing this surfacing feature. You want the backside of the selector lever to be baby-butt smooth, and laser-level flat.

    - Although it's not critical, it's always a good idea to "surface cut" all the other flat surfaces on the petcock body while it's apart: the flat top surface where it seals up against the bottom of the gas tank), the front round "lip" where the selector lever bore goes into, the flat bottom surface where the fuel outlet plate attaches (if your petcock uses a separate, bolt-on fuel outlet plate, not all original petcocks do), and the flat mating surfaces of both the petcock body and the vacuum diaphram cover plate, where the vacuum diaphram unit lives.

    - the selector lever machined "bore" or cavity in the front of the petcock also needs a good polishing, using a 600-1000 grit wetted paper. This is the surface where the o-ring that wraps around the selector lever will be riding.

    - And the most important part, and the reason why people say that the rebuild PARTS are not very good quality, is this:

    The rebuild parts are actually very good quality, and many of the aftermarket kits actually use OEM-supplied parts as their component pieces. The leaking of the petcock while in the "ON" or "RESERVE" positions is caused by one of these things:

    a) worn parts internally, which you're going to be replacing

    b) a warped back side of the selector lever face, which you're going to be surfacing flat as outlined above.

    c) a rough surface inside the petcock selector lever bore, where the lever o-ring rides.

    d) the Biggie: the vacuum diaphram O-Ring machined "seat" in the petcock body.

    Look carefully---and I mean REALLY carefully, use a magnifying glass if needed---at the 30-degree angle-cut "seat" in the back of the petcock body, where the vacuum diaphram plunger o-ring would seat, you may see some tiny scratches or even slight gouges in the seat surface.

    THESE IMPERFECTIONS IN THAT SEAT ARE WHAT CAUSES THE PETCOCKS TO DO A SLOW DRIP-DRIP-DRIP LEAK, even after they have been "rebuilt" (because in reality, the petcock has NOT been "rebuilt", it has merely had worn parts replaced). That machined seat needs to be smooth and scar-free. Fluid (gasoline) will find its way past ANY imperfection, no matter how small.

    How do you get that surface smooth and clean up imperfections in it? Well, it's not easy.

    I've had special cutting tools and polishing tools made, and for most (80%) of the used petcock bodies I work on, I can solve the problem via a clean-up cut and surface polishing process.

    Also, the diaphram plunger pressure spring gets a bit weak over time, and needs a little boost. I offer a properly sized and thickness shim washer that goes under the spring, thus increasing the spring pressure enough (but not too much) to help the o-ring seat properly onto that machined seat in the petcock body.

    Finally, ALWAYS use an o-ring assembly lube when putting together a petcock.....on the distribtuion valve, on the selector lever o-ring, on the vacuum diaphram plunger o-ring, and on the petcock-to-tank sealing ring. Not big globs of it, but thin smears. It will make your efforts last much longer.

    Filters and gaskets and screws, OH MY!!!

    At last!!! The fools .. er, folks at Canada Post and Canada Customs FINALLY saw fit to deliver my parts. 9 FRIGGIN' DAYS sitting in Customs! And they didn't even open the box! 8O

    Thanks, Len! Exactly as ordered. Love all the labelling on the individual screw/seal/grommet bags. Easy peasy! You're the best! :D

    I've felt like a kid at Christmas the past couple of days. Yesterday my headlight unit showed up. Today I got my windshield and then the care package from chacal! With the forecast calling for some mild weather and the missus working all weekend, guess what I'll be doing? :mrgreen:

    Argh,

    Did you get the o-ring info ?

    I have been getting requests to make the SpinOn in different sizes. Maybe it is time to expand the models. Although only XJ are of interest here, right ?

    Thanks Argh....yes, I noticed the rather "leisurely" pace that customs took with your package..........I guess those Canadian tax dollars aren't being spent any better than the ones down here........!

    Chacal,

    I sent through a PM regarding some tools:

    - Valve spring compressor
    - stator puller
    - valve shim tool
    - clutch boss holder

    Can you confirm if you got that. I expect you are a busy man, but just thought I'd check it made it.....

    Cheers, oby

    Hello All,

    I am looking for a gas tank for my 1983 Maxim XJ750. I got a pretty good dent in mine after a windstorm. Not sure if it's able to be fixed.

    Tankless in Oregon.

    Len:

    Before I order the reservoir coolant tank from you, i have a question about handlebar grips. I have a new pair that are billet aluminum, but there doesn't seem to be any throttle sleeve. Is this someting I need to buy? The basket case I inherited had missing grips so I don't know if there is an extra sleeve needed on the throttle side. Thanks for all you do...you rule!

    Hey Johno, yes, the right side grip goes over a plastic throttle "tube" that rotates freely against the handlebar sirface, and is "captured" on its end by the control switch assembly. This same end of the throttle tube has the capture slot for the throttle cable. The tube has a black plastic washer that fits over its end, in-between the handlebar grip and the control switch and prevents excessive wear of the side of the control switch. I do have these items in stock:

    HCP7372GCU OEM throttle TUBE, good used condition, for all '82-3 750 Seca models, and all XJ700 models.
    $ 13.00

    HCP7377VGU OEM throttle tube black plastic WASHER, fit all XJ models, very good used condition:
    $ 5.00

    Re: XJ PARTS FOR SALE---FOR ALL MAXIM, SECA, AND TURBO MODEL

    Holy Crap Chacal! My Parts were here in full as expected. The tank is Beautiful! For those of you reading this, I ordered over 700.00 in parts to add to a total of over 70 parts many of which were very hard to find. Every part thus far (over 60) has been exact and are now in hand. (thats alot of room for error).

    I have spent entire summers pre-paying for some of these parts locally only to find out by the end of the season that the shops could not (would not?) locate the parts and here I took a shot at this and BAM! there there are! Incredible to be honest.

    I absolutely love this forum and the people that make it up. It has been an invaluable resource for me in keeping the faith with this old XJ seca 750 of mine. Since I have had such a great experience with the help of the folks that make up this forum, I have decided that i am fully committed to documenting my work to share as much as I can with others (and I know I have at least 1 significant contribution to make with the current stage of my restoration project). Thank you for your mountain load of help so far Chacal and a major Thank you to our community! :)

    Hello Len. Just a quick bump to let you know that my intake boots, gaskets, and bolts arrived safely, and Don and I just installed them this afternoon. One of the old bolts was a bit stubborn, but we managed to get them all out without breaking any. (YAY!) I used the new bolts anyway, just because. Thank you for your service, and props to Gamuru for being a good wrench and a nice guy.
