Looking for a replacement seat. Not sure what terminology to use, but currently I have the the high passenger back section. It is aged and dry. Was wanting to go with the smoothing looking seat with no noticeable passenger section. Any suggestions? 82 Maxim 650.

SEATS AND SEAT COVERS:

Original and reproduction seat parts allow you to restore one of the most important parts of your entire bike: where your butt is placed! There's nothing worse than a worn, torn, faded, destroyed, ill-fitting seat to inspire ridicule amongst friends and to make your bike look old.

Our reproduction, original style seat covers are made from a durable, marine-grade vinyl that duplicates the original material grain and pattern, and has the original di-electrically heat-impressed ribs and simulated "stitching" where applicable. Made from marine-grade vinyl which is treated for both water- and mold-resistance for the ultimate in longevity.

Please note that reproduction seat cover material is not available in the same incredibly shiny gloss-black finish that original seat covers were (most people have never seen an original, brand-new XJ seat cover; but trust us-----the original materials had an almost unbelievable level of gloss and "sheen" to them which is simply not available in the aftermarket materials). People who wish to get closer to the original ultra-sheen appearance can dye these covers using our Vinyl Prep (HCP10918) and High-Gloss Vinyl Dye (HCP10349) to come very, very close to the original appearance, although, truthfully, 99.9% of owners will never notice the difference.


Although the replacement of a SEAT COVER is not a mechanically difficult task, the proper building or rebuilding of the underlying foam support IS an important factor in terms of comfort, fit, support, and durability of the finished seat and cover unit. For this reason, unless you have experience in this area, we suggest you allow an experienced upholstery shop perform the installation for you. Since our seat covers are cut and structured just like the originals, it will be a simple, trivial job for an upholstery shop to install your cover in an absolutely correctly and professional manner.

If you choose to install a cover yourself, you'll need a supply of 1/2" standard (or stainless) steel staples for the installation of the cover onto the seat pan. Such products, along with a heavy-duty staple gun, can be obtained at most hardware or home-improvement stores (Home depot, Lowe's, etc.).


By the way, since many people are curious, our experience shows us that without a LOT of effort, neither seat covers nor seat pans are interchangeable between different XJ model (for example, neither an XJ650 Maxim seat cover nor the complete seat will fit onto an XJ750 Maxim model). The seat pans are too different and have very different attaching points, brackets, and shapes to make interchange between models anything even approaching "a simple swap".
