    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

I must say, Christmas has come early in the Northwest! I ordered several items from Chacal to be delivered by the 21st of December and he gets them delivered on the 17th. Amazing!!! :D

If only all my suppliers were as expedient and easy to work with as he (and that's saying a lot working in a parts store ).

Thanks, again, Chacal. You've saved my Christmas vacation!

    Hey chacal,

XJ650 stock handlebars? Got 'em lying around someplace? Now that I have the very shiny mirrors you sent me, I need a stock bar so I can see something with them.

Apprently, one of the POs of this poor 650 stuck some nearly straight bars on this bike and some weird ugly mirrors that admittedly *work*, but they're... well... freakin' UGLY.

    Help?

I am in need of a Master Cylinder for my 83 XJ750 Maxim. Do you have one tha isn't listed by chance?

I found one and just ordered it. I was worried because I thought they might be hard to find.

Hey Kooky-----are you needing a master cylinder for a 1982 or a 1983 XJ750 Maxim? They are different. Let me know...........

    82
But I have ordered one already. Cycle Therapy had one for $55.
Thanks, if something happens and it doesn't work or something, I may need one.

The J means 82 right? Will the master cylinder from an 83 work on an 82? I thought they were the same. I guess not. For some stupid reason I think i may have said 83 xj750j to them, but I hope they would have caught it since the J means 82.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey KG.....okay, if you find it needs a rebuild kit, let me know. Make SURE that the little relief hole in the base (floor) of the reservoir is clear, that's always a big problem with old master cylinders on these bikes. You have to use a single strand of wire to push through that tiny hole to clean it..........

Yes, the "J" is the model year, meaning 1982....across all models. In other words, in 1982, we have:

    550J----1982 550 Maxim
    550RJ----1982 550 Seca
    650J----1982 650 Maxim
    650RJ---1982 650 Seca
    650LJ----1982 650 Turbo
    750J----1982 750 Maxim
    750RJ---1982 750 Seca

Note how the last character is the model year signifier:

1980 models use the letter "G" as a code for the year model.
1981 models use the letter "H" as a code for the year model.
1982 models use the letter "J" as a code for the year model.
1983 models use the letter "K" as a code for the year model.

So, for instance, a 1983 XJ750 Maxim would be:

    XJ750K

In 1985-on, the last character, if it is a "C", merely means it is a "California" model and has some emissions-related differences from the other 49-state models. The last character designates the year on non-Calif. models, , and the letter before the "C" designates the year on Calif. models:

1985 models use the letter "N" as a code for the year model.
1986 models use the letter "S" as a code for the year model.

    Examples:

    1985 Maxim non-X 49-state model = XJ700N
    1985 Maxim non-X California model = XJ700NC
    1985 Maxim X 49-state model = XJ700XN
    1985 Maxim X California model = XJ700XNC

    1986 Maxim non-X 49-state model = XJ700S
    1986 Maxim non-X California model = XJ700SNC
    1986 Maxim X 49-state model = XJ700XS
    1986 Maxim X California model = XJ700XSC

As an aside, I've always admired these 1986 "X" model codes, as the model/year designation (XS and XSC) phonetically sound out the word "excess"......and I'd congratulate Yamaha on such a clever marketing tactic, but alas, it just seems like it was a "luck of the draw" sorta thing.........

And no, I have no idea while Yamaha skipped the letter "M" for the 1985 model year designator (1984 were "L" models) and then why they skipped from "N" (1985) all the way to "S" for the 1986 model year.

Now, in regards to the differences between a 1982 and 1983 XJ750 Maxim master cylinder:

These master cylinders are basically identical, with the difference being that the 1982 750 Max version has an internal fluid level "float" and sensor unit that allows the computer dash to sense a "low brake fluid" condition. The sensor has a wire lead coming out of the base of the m/c which plugs into the main hanress.

The 1983 750 Max/Midnight Max master cylinder has no such float/sensor/lead wires, as the gauges on 1983 750 Max models are an analog (not a computer-driven) gauge package.

Therefore, the 1982 (float level sensor style) master cylinder can be successfully used on either a 1982 or 1983 model, as when it is used on a 1983 bike, you just ignore/cut-off/tape up etc. the sensor lead wires (and optionally remove the float from inside the master cylinder).

A 1983 (no sensor) master cylinder can be used on a 1982 bike, but you will lose the low-brake-fluid level warning feature, and perhaps have to deal with a gauge warning light that is always "warning" you. If you have a used 1982 master cylinder, and it still has the sensor/float/lead wires unit in it, you can successfully transplant that unit into the 1983 style master cylinder with a little bit of effort.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Thanks chacal. So I can use it if it's an 83 they send. I will call them tomorrow and see what it is before they ship it anyways. My battery warning on the display stays on already. The trick to fix it i found here didn't work for mine. Now that I fixed the switch to make the warning light stop flashing it doesn't bother me.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

KG-----if you indeed have a 1982 model XJ750 (J) Maxim, then you need to use a master cylinder off a 1982 XJ750 Maxim ONLY if you want the brake fluid level warning sensor light to function.

You can use a master cylinder off a 1983 XJ750 Max/Midnight Maxim but that master cylinder does NOT have the brake fluid warning sensor mechanism within it. Using a 1983 master cylinder on a 1982 bike will result in a brake fluid level warning on the dash either staying on continously, or never coming on even if the fluid level is low......I don't know what the result will be, as I don't know how the computer monitor system in the '82 dash interprets the input signal (or lack thereof) from the fluid sensor in the master cylinder.

You can SWAP the sensor unit out of a 1982 XJ750 Maxim master cylinder into a 1983 XJ750 Maxim or Midnight Maxim master cylinder, and then, viola!, the 1983 master cylinder becomes a 1982 master cylinder.

Again, all of this has to do with the BRAKE FLUID warning light, not the battery sensor.....that's a whole different issue!

Thanks Rettic, that was quick delivery! Mostly due to the Post Office, but I'm always happy to take the credit! Good luck with your project, let me know if I can be of further help. The free shipping offer will last for a bit longer, not sure when it'll end, maybe when the weather turns warm again....... :)

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

I put an 83 master cylinder on my 82 and it works fine. Their are some differences. I will get pics of each and post them. On the 82 the brake line connects to the end and on the 83 it connects to the front. Of course like chacal said, the 83 doesn't have the sensor, which is the only functional difference.

    Re: MAXIM PARTS FOR SALE

Hey KG....okay, if it works, great. Just be aware that the original master cylinders for both the 1982 and 1983 750 Maxims had a brake fluid outlet port that faced towards the CENTER of the bike, not forward.........

The only master cylinders that had a foward-facing fluid port are from the following models:

XJ550 all models (note, this is a "small" master cylinder for a single caliper)
    XJ650 Seca
    XJ650 Turbo models
    XJ700 all models
    XJ900
