I'm looking to do some basic maitnence on my 1982 XJ550 Maxim. It's my current project bike and I'm looking to do everything right on it. I need to know how to replace the fork springs and oil and the clutch. I've already done the oil and spark plugs.

Be sure to take a look at your brakes, brakelines and cables. Sucks when you go out and break a clutch cable 20 miles from home.... I speak from experience...

I was planning on replacing the brakes. Especially the rear drum what with the issues they had from the factory.

Yes read, and then ask questions as you start to do the things you read about. Safe and reliable should be your primary goal.

The rear drum had no issues from the factory. The adhesive for the shoe lining degrades from age, just like new linings do. The issue is that far too many mororcycles are used as toys instead of being ridden, so the brake linings don't get worn out and replaced as soon as they should.
