pipes are stock 2001 yamaha R6 cans, that were modified and cut shorter, I also had to modify the crossover outlets so everything fit together, then I painted them. It was a bit of screwing arounD but the end result was good IMO

That looks great! You should look at getting the r6 Taillights. You can get them on ebay for real cheap, theyre pretty awesome.

Im thinknig of changing my headlight to something a little more modern, but still ties in well with the bike. What would you think?

Anyway, great progress, and keep it up!

pretty much, make sure you tape everything good so nothing gets in the motor, as for the side plates, clutch and chain cover I wet sanded it starting from 360grit down to 1500 grit then used a good aluminum polish, a coat of wax and it was as good as new,...

I really got to get this bike done, been putting it off too much lately, also found out that the main jet and needle seat in #4 carb is destroyed, so now I got to rebuild it  ...oh well

Good work on this project as it is a lot of work.

The bike reminds me of the spiderman theme bike.

Ive been waiting like a dog for his bone for more pics on this build!

I for one cant wait to see the finished product. Outstanding!!!

Well thanks to a friend, I now have a tail section to work with, should make it alot easier than trying to make it from scratch, got some modifications to do but it should work out good, here's the test fit of the R1 plastics (trying to keep it all yamaha  ) :

Don't ignore the lines of the bike. See how that side panel runs parallel to the tank? And the gentle curve of the tank itself? Crotch rockets tend to be too aggressive to be mixed with an XJ, from a style standpoint. Just an opinion, tho.

...but once molded into the Xj seat pan the original body lines will be there, and the tail will be a bit lower, in the pics it's just laid on the seat pan, and an Xj can never look like a "crotch rocket", or the politically right "sport bike" , it doesn't have the frame, tank, or stance... what I'm "trying" to accomplish is a semi streetfighter look, custom like no other!

No doubt you'll get it to fit right.
Glad to see you're still working on the maxim.

I think the tail looks great - really fits what you're doing. Plus now you can get an integrated taillight and mount the plate under the pan.

Hey, I have a request.... Can you take pictures of the whole swingarm section, where it all bolts up and stuff? I'm thinking about getting an R6 swingarm and suspension and rigging it in there. Also if you could get dimensions for the chain, like how far from the tire it is. I want to make sure it would fit the wheel in.

I'm getting a 550 for a winter project, and I plan to make it a streetfighter as well.

But this information and the visuals is vital. And if you could do the same measurements on an R6 and do the same type of pictures. I want to get a good enoguh cross reference so I can build it all in.

Anyway, keep up the good work, and post up some progress! It's been forever!

Re: XJ550 Project bike, "pic heavy"

    Small update...

project has been on hold for way too long but I'm back at it now (probably won't have any pics until the new year though, slow progress! ). I had a problem finding a seat to fit the project but I finally got one a few days ago off an R1, also found out that one of my carbs had a destroyed main nozzle tube, but that should be soon fixed thanks to chacal (I'll let you know when I receive them!). I Also just acquired a large sheet of aircraft carbon fiber from the canadian air force so a few of my plans will be tweeked  ... hopefully more to come soon

have you completed the lift brackets on your rear suspension? how did that portion of the project work out?

So far, you are the only person other than myself interested in raising the rear. I think the look of the stance will improve with a modest lift. The only other option to accomplish the same thing would be swapping to a longer spring/shock setup.... Not sure which is the best option. Also not sure if it will significantly affect the handling in a negative way.

I have raised the rear on my 750max....But his is a lot easier.....I fab'ed the seat, and moved the shock mounts.
