i have an 82 550, I received the bike in running condition although at the time when bike was warm the rpms would run from idle to around 5000 rpms. That’s when I cleaned all my cables insuring none stick, changed plugs, took apart carbs and cleaned them- I didn’t not pull and clean jets or change seals , but everything was throughly cleaned. I put it all back together and it still has the same problem. The manifold boots aren’t in the best of condition but why can the bike idle normally until it gets up to temp.
I’m young and strained on money and really need these problems resolved by spring time.

Take it from someone that's been there, take your carbs to church. Then, once done, move on to check your valve clearances, syncing your cylinders, adjusting your fuel mixture, and then you can move on to looking for a vacuum leak.

Someone will be along shortly with some links filled with all the information you could want.

Kosel speaks the truth- just cleaning the carbs is not enough - replace the 30+ year olds rubber bits. Contact XJ4EVER in the upper right hand corner and order (my recommendation) the Deluxe Carb rebuild kit at minimum.

Get new cables also, cleaning and lubing is good but if you don't know their history they will tell you themselves on their own schedule.... just sayin' - been there, done that.

Read this, it will outline realistic expectations for a new XJ owner.

Safe and reliable first - then add modifications if desired.
And for the love of everything holy! Take an MSF course.

Or, you could travel up rte 8, jump over the hill, and you'll be in Northeast Parts Hoarder's territory..........

Or-- Maybe I should say 'you'll be in Central NY Carb Clinic territory'..........

you can not set the idle until bike is fully warmed up . when warmed up back off the idle screw see if you can bring it down to 1300 rpm, 1050 is spec

^^^^^+ many XJ4EVER ....Do not despair if prices are higher than what is on eBay ( the "kits" on there are NOT complete IE no throttle shaft seals) ..
