My son bought a 1982 XJ650 Seca as a project for us to restore and we need both left and right side panels. Left is available but right seems to be a hen's tooth. Does anyone have the 3d printer files for the right side panel for this bike? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Joe G. Getting these things digitized is the goal, but we haven't gotten there yet. Of course the cost of having it scanned professionally or buying a scanner is the limiting factor.

They do occasionally pop up on eBay - but you need to be patient.

It may also be worth posting a "Wanted" post in the "For Sale/Wanted" section of this site. Somebody might have one they are willing to part with. At least worth a try.

    Thanks Dan!

Do you, or anyone, know if a Maxim's side panels will fit a SECA? I just hate the unfinished look of open side panels.

No, the mounting points are completely different.

@Joe G , just out of curiosity, do you have access to a sufficiently large printer? That is obviously one of the sticky wickets with getting these things digitized - even if we had the data, there aren't many people that have that have a printer sitting around that can do that size of a part.

My son says he does at his college. He’s part of the makers space and a group of them are into bikes and restoring them. I’m personally glad he’s learning to wrench along with all the bookwork.

    That's awesome.

Any chance he would have access to a scanner?

That is a very good question…I will find out and post up. If by chance he can, and if by chance I can get a set to scan and print, I will be sure and post up the files hereto for others!

He just finished restoring a 1980 Yamaha XT250, got it running like a top and all decked out, had to get some 3d printed side panels from a gent in the UK for that one. He swapped it for this 650. He has a Honda 800 Shadow that he got running and on the road, he’ll be selling that if he gets the XJ650 running. He likes the UJM styling and ride positioning.

Cool. If per chance he has the ability to do a scan, I think I could arrange getting a subject to scan.

Can't you scan one side panel and then reverse it in CAD to make the other side? Don't they mount the same?

I can double check, but I don't believe so (at least for the RJs).

For reference: 650 Seca panels on top, 750 Seca in the middle, and 650 Maxim on the bottom. None of them are symmetric.

Figures, I knew the bottom extension on the right side would be the difference but now I see how they also mount differently. I never noticed the difference on mine.

Unfortunately, my boy says doesn’t have access to a 3d scanner at University. He goes to University of Missouri Science & Technology…you’d think they would have one! Maybe he just doesn’t know WHO has one.

Ok. Giving an update. I attempted to draw on Solidworks but the contours are difficult for me. I tried several lofts and it's taking up a lot of my time. Imma call it quits.

Appreciate the try. I have a set on order and my buy says my iPhone may be able to scan them so he can print them at college.
But my phone is too old to have LiDAR so it may not work.
We will give it a shot and report back.

@Racerin - can confirm, it is a difficult task to try in CAD. Unless you are some super-ninja it is really hard.

I've also tried photogrammetry with several different cameras, the iPhone scanner, even an Xbox Kinect scanner setup. So far I've not had any luck with any of those.

I'm not going to tell anybody NOT to try some of these things - go for it if you are so inclined - just saying I've spent a fair amount of time and gotten crap results. Hopefully somebody else can do much better.

Seems like a "pro" level scanner or a professional service are probably the best options. I suspect that even if one had the fancy scanner, you'd still have to be good at "fixing" the model after scanning.

One of these days when I have some money that I don't know what to do with I will get a scanner. Then we can scan all the parts.

Good to know. I figure since my son's in college to be an engineer, this will be a good experience for him! If it works I will be sure and post up the files.
