Hey everybody I have a 1982 XJ650, It starts right up but won't stay running. I have played around with the idle adjust screw and it will work for a little bit but then back to the same old thing. Would syncing my carbs be the next best possible route? Thank you and appreciate any feedback!

do you use the choke to start it? and wait till the rpm starts to climb before you shut the choke off?

how long have you had the bike ? are all the exhaust pipes getting hot?

I do use the choke to start it, I let it warm up pretty long before taking choke away. After about 30 seconds with choke off rpms drop off and the bike dies. I have had the bike for 1 year. Exhaust temps are even across all four cylinders.

Your carbs need a thorough cleaning....go to church.....your pilot jets are clogged ....that is why it dies after taking choke off....

Your carbs must be taken apart all the way.....anything short of that.......you will be doing it again

do the rpms climb before you shut choke off?
as @fiveofakind said the pilot jets are clogged they run the motor for the first 2k rpm and if they are clogged the main jets arn't in much better shape

time to bite the bullet and clean the carbs

^^^^+1 agree your carbs are in need of cleaning and Synching .... Ethonal does a number on carbs ...plugs up passages pretty quick , chances are when you pull float bowls it will be GREEN inside .
