This is the Eastwood universal engine paint in gloss black. It is mixed 4:1 with an activator and can be reduced up to 10% for spraying, which is what I did.

    It can be brushed too

I am still tinkering with spray gun settings...

I got the honing done today.

All of the ring gaps measured within spec.

    So far so good

Where did you get your hone? I still need to do mine.

I just have a basic old school three-stone spring loaded thing. I think you can get one for around $15.

Never tried one of those ball hone things, but my guess is that they would be a little easier to use than the spring loaded contraption.

The reason I asked is that both versions seem to get bad reviews on Amazon, so what to buy from where?

So far it has held up. Good for at least 8 cylinders!

For the price and for how often I need it, it is fine.

I’m getting back to this little project.

I got the valves, stem seals, and springs installed last night.

Pistons are re-installed. The guy who started this project had a lot of the parts except gaskets. But when installing the last gudgeon pin circlip I managed to send it spoinging across the garage - never to be seen again. Gave me a good excuse to go for a ride to the friendly local Yamaha dealer to pick up a replacement.

    And… done!!

should be able to get a numbers matching RJ back on the road instead of in the scrap heap. I’m pretty happy about that.

thanks everybody who helped me with this little project. On to the next project!

That would be great, thanks. I made a SWAG where it made sense, but it would be great if we could document “correct”

With freshly lapped valves like in this engine, what is to be expected as far as valve clearance needing to be checked again?

I need to leave a note to my future self saying “check valves after xxxxx miles”
