    welder done,
    painted the tank,

It might be worth pointing out that the RED is only hot when connected to ground, as DC runs from neg to poss.

Looks great. Don't forget to prime those welds or she'll rust in a hurry on ya. I hope you have the seat spring kit too, you're gonna need it. PM me if you have any wiring or tuning issues. I'm digging it though.

Re: topic rename (again)-XS400 Maxim Kennys build - (pics)

    well motherf*cker !
    hah,

I was drilling the seat holes in the new bracket, and the bit i used got red hot. destroyed the drill bit. no worries, but then i realized i was slightly off, so i tried pushing the mount over to fit the seat into the hole,
and dammit - who knew metal conducts heat so well eh? burnt the hell outta my right palm.. sigh. (insert 'love life' joke here)

imight have to redrill a bit to make the seat fit...

regarding the springs - id love too, but the ones i have are too big. i might try the 'leaf' springs (?) or get some smaller ones for the seat. hah. gonna be a tough bike till then eh?

Thanks for the comments guys, i'm really diggin the fact that its coming together so well for my very first mechanical project. coming from an IT background, and not taking shop, or mechanics in highschool, this is goin pretty good. For all you n00bs out there trying your first project, keep with it, google the hell out of it and ask questions. your gonna make it!

I was going to chime in earlier but did not have the time. Looking good. You are coming along much better than I am. I however just picked up some rims my buddy had off a xs400 special he is parting out. The front tires are an inch smaller in diameter. But the spoked rims look really cool on the bike. I was looking to go the hardtail route but having just recently herneating a disc in my back I am having second thought about that. I will add the link to the post I had with a couple pics on it. But anyways keep up the good work.
Here is the link to my post if you want to see where I am at with my bike:

Motion Pro can custom make any cables you want. I had them hook me up with the front brake cable and the rest I got from chacal to fit the 15" apes. Are you goin with 15's as well and where did you get them?

Haven't been keeping up with this thread lately, but am I the only one concerned about a "professional" welder needing the bike to be layed over on its side to weld????
    Check those welds!

16oz - hah ya no doubt right?
we did it all upright which is good. and i've yanked and pulled and pushed. the welds look clean from my inspection.. looks like ones's ive seen on the old youtube vids on the 'pro welder' teachin ya how kinda stuff. im confident they'll be fine.
everything is goin well, just gotta finish the tank mount and the front of the seat. shouuuldd be there soon.

xyxj650 - nice, i like your bars man. got confused on the last pic, thought you were goin trike mode till i looked closer. im interested to see your build go through.

wingman - dude get to it man ! im stoked to see it too. i like seeing wht other people have done with the same type of bike as me.

I want to throw a shout out to the people on this site again, cause its pretty freakin awesome. i even (unintentionally) ditched the other bike sites I'm on for my C50 and Triumph project (Triumph is for this winter, if this one Im on now goes well) - you guys are a vast amount of info - and I appreciate it.

    hey all,

hahah thanks for pushin me to update DW... been out and about of course, all that typical summer stuff that keeps you busy :p.. work, ball, vacation etc :p

back from vacation about a month ago. took this bastard out in the back of a truck to work on it with a buddy of mine in BC. redid some of the welds, and put some valve springs under the seat

still gotta sand down some bare metal and paint it,
and i gotta clean up those cuts near the bottom there from the original cut.

lost the keys the other day on the side of the road... hardtail musta shaken it out. these are pics stranded on the side of the road... i push started it without the keys, but have nothin to open the tank with, so i had to take a trailer up and get it :p

Nice work man gorgeous bike, Im looking at XS400J for a cafe custom job.

Your thread was crucial for me learning a ton about this bike before i start throwing money away. Mainly the frame, Which i think is the most intriguing part of this model. Way to go bro thanks for having us along on the adventure.

Monocoque frame design, monocross suspension. i cant wait to caf this bastard into a real rocker.

Are you sure it's 3.75"? That seems wierd. The largest tunnel width on tanks I have found was 3".

it's not possible. I'm doing a hard tail with a lot of stretch on this same bike and i'm having to build custom tanks (out of air compressor cylinders :D ). f'n stamped frames.

btw. does anyone know where to get cheap filler necks for custom tanks? I want the old cam style, but the best deal I could find was ~$15/ea
