Been a while since i last posted on here. IM after the Carb settings for a rare Yamaha XJ400E Seca- it is a 4 inline akin to an XJ550 seca.
Im not sure what the pilot screw setting should be as i have an over rich mixture on all four cylinders and it holds the rpm briefly at about 1800rpm before dropping- cold starting is a mare

Please note this is NOT a XS400 of a XJ400 twin.

Blimey, where did that come from? Austria or Switzerland had them I think.. Before you start adjusting the carbs you need to ensure valve clearances are correct. If teh screw you are referring to is on top closest to the head then its a fuel metereing screw to turn clockwise will lean the mixture IIRC. someone will be along soon to give a start point. my guess will be 2 turns out.

Hi i believe it was a Grey import from Japan , brought in by a now shut down London Motorcycle shop that developed a bit of a bad reputation, from what i found online about them- which kind of explains why my bike is stuck with a Q plate . It is a 4G0 model, engine has no unique number, just stamped 4g0 , which when i bought the bike i didnt know it was a common practice in Japan.
Yeh im going to check the valve clearances, if i have time, today and if theyre out i will get the tool and reshim . The pilot screws im refering to are underneath the carb body, ' upside down', just forward of the float bowl. At the moment i appear to have a very sooty rich running condition- exhaust has soot on it, and all plugs are evenly dark brown with soot.
The carbs were dismantled completetly, ultra sonic cleaned- new valves, seats, o rings and other gaskets and new idle n main jets which i managed to find the correct sizes for this engine, which the ones i pulled were correct.
When i bought it i got what looked like a field bike roughly idling for about 30 mins on gummy sticky carbs, so i felt assured that the engine isnt bad, just needs alot of tlc.i did a compression test and all cylinders were ok and even compression readings..
Im only mentioning all this, so that hopefully it will aid any reader understand the current 'health' of the bike and what ive done so far to try to gain a reliable healthy running engine. :)

id share a photo but i havnt a clue how to attach a photo atm
